Hello,
Could someone please give some general information on the lighting setups being used? Someone posted some pictures at http://www.reefcentral.com of a few of the tanks here and I am very impressed with all of the tanks, and the lighting in particular. In the pictures I saw I did not see any VHO actinic lighting being used with the metal halides, which is very common to see in the states. I am wondering what types of bulbs are being used with these setups and how high the lights are being suspended above the tank.
Great tanks and very nice web site! [Edité le 6/12/2001 par Steve] |

Hello Steve,
Usually, we take HQI bulbs, often mixed with blue neons tubes (but this is only for visual effect).
The bulbs are used to be 10 000°K, the 14000°K is being very popular, and sometimes 20 000°K. In the last 2 ones, the blue neons tubes are not necessary as the blus color is very strong.
The trades are generally Hit lite, aqualine, aquaconnect...
Personally I have my lights 30cm above the water surface.
Cheers |

Hello,
Welcome in our community.
I hope that we will have a lot of interesting discussions.
There are a lot of difference between the United States and France,on reefkeeping hardware.
VHO lighting are not frequent and are difficult to find.
Generaly, French aquarists use HQI 10000 °K with combination of Blue moon or Osram 67.
HQI are generally located at 30 cm above water surface.
Cheers
Sarah (Sorry for my bad english, I will try to improve it) |

I was also wondering what typed of lights you all use I was thinking of upgrading my metal Halides 250watt 65000K to 250watt 10000K HQI. What wattages do you all use there for your HQI lights. 250/400watt??? |

Personally I use 250W hit lite 10 000°K bulbs for 60cm depth water... But If you use 400W, it's better

I also saw your very beautiful tanks at Reef Central. The trend in the USA is to build light fixtures, and to customize the lighting based on the corals one chooses to keep. Most of the light fixtures in your pictures appeared to be professionally made. Is that correct, or am I seeing great workmanship?

The trends here are the same, but a lot of people buy some professional made lights. And I've bought one (Blesseim). But when you're starting in the hobby, you do not have a lot of contacts and it isn't so easy ti find material to make it yourself I think. If I'll need one now, I'll do it myself for sure... |

Agu asked my next question. The lighting fixtures in the pictures I mentioned posted on reefcentral are much more creative than we normally see. Most always the tanks here have a wood box canopy resting on top of the tank to house the lights. That works fine, but I like the suspended approach better myself. I think it looks nicer and would probably help with the heat issues associated with metal halides.
Thank you all for the information, and do not apologize for your good english Sarah. I know very very little french. But I do know, merci beaucoup ! |

Hello,
It's very cool that some american people come here.
I have another information about the wattage of HQI. I heared (a professionnal) 400W/m2 it's necessary for 60cm depth of water.
We can say its the minimum, and higher wattage is better.
